Non-Fiction Reading Response

Edward Snowden, a former National Secrurity Agency (N.S.A) worker, is now holed up in Russia, after exposing a program the N.S.A used to spy on Americans and foreigners. Snowden now risks life in prison if he returns to the U.S. "The 30 year old high school drop-out and computer whiz from North Carolina may be the most famous fugitive in the world- hailed as a hero by some, denounced as a traitor by others. But thanks to Snowden, President Obama has now acknowledged that the data collection programs the N.S.A is using may have gone to far. When working as a computer systems contractor, Snowden was troubled when he collected hundreds of thousands of top-secret documents about various classified surveillance programs, so he decided to make the documents public.
The author explains in the article "Edward Snowden: Traitor or Hero?" who exactly is Edward Snowden, and how he did was such a big deal, in this case, how he revealed a program that shocked many Americans. Though in this article, the author was seemly bias to Edward Snowdens side, making the government seem like the "bad guys", and that it wasn't that serious that Snowden leaked top-secret files to the public. Though the article wasn't completely bias, giving both sides a say. "Courts so far have been divided over the spying program. A federal judge in Washington D.C. ruled in December that some of N.S.A.'s surveillance was probably unconstitutional. A week later, another federal judge in New York came to the opposite conclusion, ruling the N.S.A program legal and setting up the possibility that the Supreme Court will ultimately have to settle the matter".
After reading this article, I have realized that the  government can really hide anything they want from the public, whether it should be important that we know or not. I feel that the government taking our information without us knowing is a bit harsh, but when I realize that a lot of other companies are doing the same thing, it made me think "Whats the difference?". In fact, I'd feel better putting my info in the hands of the government than any random company.

  1. I like how much information you put into your writing to make me understand the problem in general, not being opinionated till the last paragraph.
